Does your roof need to be maintained?

After buying your car, do you just drive it until it stops working?  No.  In order to get the most out of your car you maintain it; taking it for oil changes, changing the tires, replacing headlights – basically all the things that keep your car in good working condition.  Well the same concept applies to your roof.  Regular roof maintenance will extend the service life of your existing roof system.

By maintaining your roof, you are proactively working to identify any possible problems before they occur, rather than simply reacting to them once they appear.  As with any problem, early detection is the key to minimizing and preventing costly damages.  When a problem is addressed at its initial stage, it can be corrected before it becomes a severe problem with the potential for costly interior property damage.

These are some simple steps you can take to help maintain the condition of your roof:

  • Clean all debris from the surface of the roof
  • Keep all gutters free of debris
  • Trim back any overhanging tree branches – these can cause damage
  • If your roof is starting to collect moss or algae, install some zinc or lead control strips
  • Check all flashings – make sure they have not deteriorated and that there are no holes in them
  • Replace any damaged shingles (this should be called in to your roofing installer, as it may be covered under a workmanship warranty)
  • Check all caulking and sealants – ensure that they are still sealed
  • Check the mortar on chimneys and parapet walls, both in between the brick and on top
  • Check for blisters in the roof – if evident, DO NOT STEP ON OR PUNCTURE THEM.

Keep in mind that the roof is the area of a building that gets the most abuse from the elements. By maintaining your roof, you are ensuring many years of useful service life for your roof.

Sales Fishing Trip

Spiro's catchM&M had a great month of sales in October so Nick took the sales team charter fishing out of Burnham Harbor on lake Michigan to celebrate! They had plenty of food and drinks with a few cigars thrown in. The captain of the boat took them out about 14 miles, they said it felt like 30 miles! For the next eight hours they fished, hung out and had a good time.  Jim K was the only victim of green gills but luckily it didn’t happen until the end of the trip. They caught about nine or ten fish with Spiro catching the biggest at about 13 pounds. According to the captain this was one of the largest salmon caught by his boat this year. On their way back in the captain cut up all the fish and they each had plenty of filets for future eating. The weather was perfect and they all had a good time, even Jim K. The ride back in took forever and when they finally got home Spiro was asleep in five minutes.

We want to thank all of our great customers who have trusted M&M for all of their home remodeling needs!! We hope to continue serving you for many more years to come.

Best rooms to invest in

If your planning on doing some home remodeling to your home, think about how long your going to live in your house and what the surrounding homes have. You don’t want to invest in something that will not make a difference or bring the value of your home up. Some of the rooms in your home that you will not go wrong on are the Kitchen and bathroom.  For exterior work, siding and windows provide you with the most ROI.

Beware of storm chaser contractors

Rain, hail and tornado’s is not all the bad weather brings in. It also brings storm chaser contractors. These are companies or individuals that follow severe weather from area to area, completing home repairs (generally roofs and siding) that are damaged by hail and wind. They collect payment for their services, complete the work (or not, or do horrible job) before moving on to the next storm ravaged area. And homeowners will never hear from them again and will have to pay double to have a real company come out and fix what they had payed to get done in the first place. When it comes to home repairs make sure your using someone you trust and know will be around. Click to watch these stories. Storm Chaser Contractor Scams
